Did you miss me?

I’m sure no-one minded and hey it was just a personal rule but I didn’t write last week. Nothing to get too worried about in the grand scheme of things and yet somehow it matters. Once I started blogging I was determined to write once a week. Even when I suffered from writer’s block and asked you the readers to challenge me I still kept that up, even exceeded it once in a while. I’ve found the discipline of writing to be a salve for my mind, allowing me to articulate and process thoughts that have been running around in my head. Last week was different though. In truth I wasn’t terribly well for much of the week but it’s not like I was bedridden or drugged against the pain. I’ve had a blog bubbling about “authenticity” and I wanted to get it published and get some feedback on my thoughts. However, I just couldn’t do it all. As I looked at the text I realised that the authentic Jon obviously needed a break not just from that post but from writing all together so I just let it go.

As I thought about whether I was going to write I wondered if any of my regular readers would check in & enquire whether I was writing anything last week. I wondered wether anyone would even notice. Between Twitter, Facebook, Linked In etc we are rarely disconnected these days and we all “announce” when we have something to say. We are used to our friends broadcasting their thoughts to us, there’s not much we need to do apart from sift the endless stream of data for the interesting bits. After all, people rarely post what they aren’t doing or what they didn’t read.

This fact got my mind working. I took a look at who I hadn’t heard from in a while /who hadn’t been busy on social media and then I made a couple of calls and wrote a letter and an email. Since I did that I’ve spoken to 3 of the 4 people and agreed to meet the other for a proper catch up. In all the cases they were glad that I’d made the move and they really appreciated the personal touch.

This post isn’t about bashing all our lovely new technology but it is a plea to remember that communication is two way, it’s not just a choice between transmitting or receiving , sometimes you need to reach out and be the other end of the conversation.

My call to action? Well, who is missing from your life currently? Reach out to them, a call, a letter or postcard. If you really want to go the extra mile then take a look at what is missing from your life as well as the who, maybe they’re connected………
